Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

November 09, 2009
I recently came across an amazing lagrangian simulation method for hydrodynamics - Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). I came across this method while researching for my course project on "Numerical methods for the giant impact hypothesis for formation of the Moon" - exciting project. I realized that the most dominant method for numerical simulations in the field is SPH and the more I started reading about it, the more I started liking it. First of all it is a lagrangian method so all the amazing things that come with is are available - track particle histories, tract shock wave fronts, discontinuities, not having to handle the advective term in the NS equations. Furthermore, it is a mesh-free lagrangian method, which is great - it saves a lot of computational time! Due to shortage of time I will not go about detailing much of SPH here, so what I will do is for the interested reader, I will leave references from where they can learn more about the topic.

New Social Network

September 11, 2009
Today I created a new social network site (SNS) for the University of Toronto's Physics and Astronomy Student Union - uoftpasu.ning.com. I used the service provided by Ning, which allows people to create their own social networking sites. I must admit it is actually pretty cool. It has almost all the necessary tools/applications to create a SNS that is similar to other current popular SNS's. People should definately check Ning out. It can be a great tool for other student groups, clubs, or other small organizations.

Photo Contests!

August 11, 2009
Hey, yesterday I came found out about these photo contests. They are all actually pretty good and have good prizes!

HTTrack

So, a few days ago while searching something on the net, I came across this free software HTTrack that allows users to download entire websites recursively (directories, images, HTML files etc. )to their hard disk for offline browsing. It also allows to overriding of robots.txt.

Hello internet! This is my first (test) post on my newly activated website. I plan to make regular posts about things related to physics, mathematics, computer science and photography. My posts will include video tutorials, text tutorials, tips/tricks, news that I came across, info on projects I am working on, public distribution of some useful computer codes, solutions to some physics, math problems etc. etc. With time I may decide to branch off and post on topics related to other fields as well. Cooking, seems to be a likely future candidate! Stay tuned, and please bookmark this page!
